Games

Project Arrow is a class designed for the gifted and highly able learner. The goal is to challenge the students with material that stresses higher level thinking skills that involve critical and creative thinking.

Identification

Grade 1

First grade students who are recommended by teachers or parents, take the Otis Lennon Student Ability Test and the Stanford Achievement Test during the month of December. A matrix is completed identifying students within the top 2% ile on the performance criteria designated by the District.

Grades 2 and 4

All second- and fourth-grade students in the district take the Otis Lennon Student Ability Test and the Stanford Achievement Test during the month of October. Teachers complete a referral form on students who will be considered for gifted services. Parent requests for consideration are also honored. The referral form includes the reading, math, language arts scores and the verbal, nonverbal and total ability scores. These test scores, along with a teacher checklist, are used to identify students who achieve within the top 5% ile on the performance criteria designated by the District. Notification is sent to parents if the child qualifies for Project Arrow. Newly identified students begin services the first week in February.

Grade 3

Third grade students take the Stanford Achievement Test in October. Teachers complete a referral form on students who will be considered for gifted services. Parent requests for consideration are also honored. The referral form includes the most recent reading, math, language arts and the verbal, nonverbal and total ability scores from the previous year. Procedure to identify students for the program is the same as for grades 2 and 4.

Grade 5: Identification for Middle School

During the month of October, all fifth-grade students are administered the Stanford Achievement Test. Teachers complete a referral form for students who will be considered for gifted services in the Math Strand or the Reading Strand. At the middle school level. Parent requests for consideration are also honored. In March or April, fifth-grade students enrolled in math acceleration classes may take the Iowa Algebra Aptitude and the Differential Aptitude Tests. Cutoff scores for eligibility identify students who achieve within the top 2% on the math performance criteria designated by the district.

Achievement test scores for reading and language arts are combined with the previous year’s ability scores and science and social studies subtest scores on a matrix. The cutoff point for eligibility identifies students who achieve within the top 5% on the performance criteria designated by the District. Parents are notified of student eligibility for either Strand during the month of April or May.

The program has two main components: Project Arrow and Enrichment. Project Arrow students have been identified by standardized achievement tests. Enrichment students are selected by the classroom teacher.
