Concepts and Principles

Grade Level Standard:
The learner will apply concepts of systems, form and function, change and consistency, and models and explanations within the sciences.

Concepts to be Taught:

bullet HOW LIVING THINGS FUNCTION, ADAPT, AND CHANGE
Compare and contrast how different forms and structures reflect different functions (Example: circulatory and respiratory systems).
bullet HOW LIVING THINGS INTERACT WITH THEIR ENVIRONMENT
Describe how living things depend on one another for survival.

Identify physical features of plants and animals that help them live in different environments.

Describe relationships among various organisms in their environments.

bullet PROPERTIES OF MATTER AND ENERGY AND THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THEM
Describe the properties of specified liquids, solids, and gases, and their resulting specific interactions.
bullet DESCRIBE FEATURES AND PROCESSES OF EARTH AND ITS RESOURCES
Identify and explain natural cycles of the earth's land, water, and atmospheric systems (Example: the rock cycle)
Describe and explain short and long term interactions of the Earth's components (Example: volcanoes and earthquakes).
bullet EXPLAIN COMPOSITION AND STRUCTURE OF THE UNIVERSE AND EARTH'S PLACE IN IT
Identify and explain natural cycles and patters in the solar system (Example: planet order, solar eclipse, Earth's yearly orbit around the sun).

Science,Technology, and Society

Grade Level Standard:
The learner will demonstrate their understanding of the relationships among science, technology, and society.

Concepts to be Taught:

KNOW ACCEPTED PRACTICES OF SCIENCE
Explain why similar investigations may not produce the same results.
Continue to use basic safety practices.
DESCRIBE THE INTERACTION BETWEEN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY
Analyze how specific personal and societal choices that humans make affect local, regional, and global ecosystems.

Science Processes, Inquiry, and Technology

Grade Level Standard:
The learner will demonstrate the abilities necessary to solve increasingly complex scientific problems in a variety of ways.

Concepts to be Taught:

KNOW PRINCIPLES OF PROCESSES OF SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY
Formulate questions on a specific science topic and choose the steps needed to answer the questions.
Collect data for scientific investigations using scientific process skills including observing, estimating, and measuring.
Construct charts and visuals to display data.
Use data to produce reasonable explanations.
Report and display the results of individual and group investigations.
